Arts in Bartlett welcomes the fall music season with violinist Katherine Andrick and renowned Chicago jazz guitarist Frank Portolese in a “gypsy jazz” concert.
Andrick has strong roots in classical music but fell in love with jazz improvisation during her time at Elmhurst College. It was there that she and Portolese perfected their own take on gypsy jazz, also known as gypsy swing, which traveled from the gypsy camps outside Paris in the 1930s to the jazz clubs of America. They draw on Portolese’s love of chord melodies, and Andrick's influence from the likes of Stephane Grappelli, Stuff Smith, and Jean-Luc Ponty. As a duo, they glide seamlessly through jazz standards with a unique style and connection that comes from playing together for many years.
